About
The history of the village of Beer revolves around Beer Quarry Caves, which have been worked by hand since Roman times. Work in the caves stopped in 1920 leaving awe-inspiring caverns with mighty halls of vaulted roofs and pillars of Beer Stone which have been likened to a vast underground cathedral.
The Caves' guided tours offer a fascinating insight into the history of the stone excavation, and the personal stories of the life and times of the stonemasons and quarrymen.
Beer Quarry Caves are also internationally important as a hibernaculum for Greater and Lesser Horseshoe bats. Due to the bats' need for consistent temperature during hibernation, the caves are closed to the public in the winter.
