Winter is a time for reflection on the Jurassic Coast, for hunkering down with a nice warming beverage, rearranging your fossil collection, and thinking about the year past and the year to come. Thankfully, we are a year-round destination and there is always something to do here to keep you inspired and entertained, even when it’s nippy outside.

Fossil hunting

Psssstt! We’re going to let you in on a little secret. The very best time to go fossil hunting is in winter. The advantages are two-fold:

1.    It’s much quieter on the beaches – Winter is the best time to book a guided fossil walk, as the experts leading it will have much more time to chat and there’ll be more buried treasure to discover (see our next point). The group sizes are smaller and you’ll be able to book closer to the day, meaning you can make it a spontaneous Saturday outing if you fancy it (and the tides are favourable of course).

2.    There is more to find – Winter storms are a fossil hunter’s best friend. They churn at the fossil-bearing rocks of the Jurassic Coast, prying loose some of its best prehistoric relics to be discovered on the beach. And because there are fewer visitors, it means you’ll have more time to find your very own special specimen to take home with you.

Ever wanted to see Durdle Door but didn’t fancy the crowds, traffic and queues for the loos? Well, Winter is prime time to see it. Pick one of those bright and brisk Winter mornings and head out, safe in the knowledge the roads will be quiet and you’ll have the famous location mainly to yourself for the day. Other popular spots worth the trip in the cooler months are Studland and Lulworth Cove.
