You might think the best time to visit the coast is the summer, but just because the sun has left us for a few months doesn’t mean that you have to stay home. It isn’t just about relaxing on the beaches, there are plenty of reasons to visit the Jurassic Coast during the winter months – here are some of the things you can expect to enjoy on the coast in December.

Winter Walks

There is nothing quite like a bracing winter walk, especially if there are a couple of stops at some of the region’s pubs for some light refreshments or a hearty meal. The Jurassic Coast has a host of lovely walking routes, as does the South West Coast Path, which you can join in both Devon and Dorset.

Visit a Christmas Market

It is the season to eat, drink and be merry, so why not stop off at one of the region’s Christmas Markets and stock up on all your favourite festive treats? You could even fill up on mulled wine and mince pies. Plus it’s a great way to support local producers and take home a true taste of the Jurassic Coast.

Go birdwatching

It’s not for everyone but this time of year is ideal for anyone who loves wildlife – during the winter months you’ll often spot species you won’s see at other times of year. There are several sea birds and birds of prey to be seen across the area, or head somewhere like Seaton Wetlands and camp out in one of their hides.

Get in the spirit with a cosy cottage stay

One of the best things about the winter months is curling up in front of a roaring fire, so why not book a last minute December get away at one of the coast’s many cottages?

See in the New Year in style

It isn’t just cosy cottages that make a great place to stay during this time of year, the Jurassic Coast’s hotels are the place to be for seeing in the New Year in style – book your New Year break and enjoy fireworks, sparkles and not having to clean up the next day!
